Research Direction: My research interest lies in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. This focus is directed at developing innovative approaches to service delivery within the community and the efficacy of these interventions. Two current federal grants which support this research agenda at UNH include:
A field Initiated Research grant from the National Institute for Disability Rehabilitation Research to study the efficacy of Project PATH - a home-based health promotion program aimed at reducing complications and secondary conditions following spinal cord injury.
A professional preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services developing a transdisciplinary curriculum for Occupational Therapists, Recreation Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Teachers at UNH.
Interests/hobbies: So many things so little space. Travel, golf, gardening and University of Michigan and Pittsburgh sports teams.

Interests/hobbies — Renovating a 1790’s colonial home. Fishing — largely as an excuse to watch sunrises and sunsets around lakes and streams. International travel. Music of all kinds, good books and the occasional round of golf.

Dr. Carroll holds an M.S. in Natural Resources, Recreation and Tourism, and a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Recreation Management, both from Colorado State University. Prior to his arrival at the University of New Hampshire, Joshua has developed methods for measuring and maintaining acceptable management strategies of both water and land-based recreation areas. His current research applies various frameworks to recreation and natural resources in order to achieve cohesive planning and management. His recent projects have involved mapping and classifying the recreation opportunities along 75 miles of river in northern NH, and a publication in Human Ecology Review entitled Context, Beliefs, and Attitudes toward Wildand Fire Management: An examination of residents of the wildland-urban interface. Outside of academia Josh is an avid cyclist, sailor, surfer, and winter sport enthusiast.

Research Direction — Currently engaged in NIDRR research grant entitled "Project PATH: Promoting Access, Transition and Health." This study is examining the effects of an in-home/community TR intervention on the incidence and prevalence of secondary medical complications among people with newly acquired spinal cord injury.
