Family Studies, Child Study and Development Center

Giving Back

Each year, more than 100 students enrolled in family studies courses at UNH use the Child Study and Development Center (CSDC) as a laboratory for experimental teaching and learning and for documenting those experiences.

Julie McLeod entered UNH with a major in communication sciences and disorders, knowing that she wanted to work with children. She was employed at the center for a year as a work-study student, and the experience, she says, offered her the confidence and knowledge she needed to support children in their development. “I feel that I learned more in the four years I worked at the CSDC than I could have learned in any class,” she says with a smile.

So, when McLeod graduated and left the University and the center, she decided to make a contribution. In an attached note she wrote, “I would like to thank the staff and children of CSDC for all they have taught me in my time here. Please accept this small donation to use for the betterment of the center. I only wish I were able to contribute more. Please use it so that all staff and children will benefit.”

“Working at the center gives you a new sense of passion,” says McLeod, who is now studying for a master’s in speech pathology. “My parents were really supportive of me in making the donation. They saw how much the center meant to me. I graduated knowing many of the skills I will need to be successful in the future.”
